I am a total fan of limited edition anything! Put a shamrock on it, and I will buy twenty! I also love sneaking in super foods to normal food while no one is looking. So lets make a sneaky super food shamrock shake!
Remove Processed Sugar
Our biggest hurdle in making a healthier drink is removing all the processed sugar. I am sure you are familiar with all the articles out now about how processed sugar is bad for you and more addictive than crack…blah, blah, blah. While I am definitely NOT cutting out sugar altogether, there are easy ways to swap out the highly processed junk while keeping it sweet. For this recipe we will be subbing in agave syrup. A little bit of this sweet alternative goes a long way!
The Super Food Sneak
Next up, our super food sneak! For a nice green shamrock-y color, we are adding in spirulina! If you aren’t super familiar with spirulina, it contains tons of B vitamins, easily absorbed protein, iron, chlorophyll, beta-carotene, and lots of other great stuff. This little super food packs a big punch!
You can buy a good brand of spirulina for not a ton of money, and it will last you for quite a while. It is a fantastic smoothie add in for tons of healthy benefits! Beware!! Go easy on this stuff, start with a very small amount, and add in little bits at a time! Otherwise it will start tasting a bit fishy…seriously, I mean fishy, literally!
Not the Whipped Cream!
Last up, the whipped cream topping. Alright, don’t kill me, I am not leaving out the whipped cream!! Instead of using another high processed sugar and dairy product, (hello adult acne) we are just going to use a more natural alternative. We are making coconut whipped cream! I LOVE this stuff and put it on everything!!
Okay, so if you have never made coconut whipped cream before it is simple. Put a can of coconut milk in the fridge overnight, or in the freezer for about 20-30 minutes. Another option is stick it in your fridge as soon as it comes home from the store so it is ready whenever the mood strikes…you know what I’m sayin’…ala midnight snack! Next scoop out the solid part on top, toss out the watery part, and blend on high speed until it forms a whipped cream texture. I will usually add in vanilla and a sweetener as well to make it more delicious! Note- if your vanilla and sweetener are dark, it will muddy the color. Use a clear vanilla, and a sweetener like agave to keep the color more white instead of beige or brown.
So in review of this sneaky super food shamrock shake, we removed the processed sugar, added a super food, and made a healthy whipped cream! It is also available anytime day or night without a drive to a fast food joint. Good news! This shake is now easier on your wallet and your hips! How about a second? 🙂
Sneaky Super Food Shamrock Shake
- 1 1/2 whole frozen banana
- 1 handfull icecubes about a half cup
- 2 scoops vanilla protein powder
- 1/4 teaspoon spirulina powder
- 1 handfull fresh mint leaves about a loose 1/3 cup- 1/2 cup
- 1/2 tablespoon cacao powder (or cocoa powder) You can use more, but it will make the color more brown than green.
- 1 splash vanilla
- 1 splash sweetener of choice optional
- 1- 1 1/2 cups almond milk or coconut milk add a little more if the smoothie is too hard to blend
Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth. (Depending on how good your blender is, blend up the nut milk and mint leaves together first to make sure the leaves blend up smooth, then add in the rest of the ingredients.)
Use chocolate syrup to decorate the glass before pouring in your smoothie (optional). You can also layer in the chocolate syrup if you want a more chocolate flavor...pour in a little smoothie, drizzle chocolate, pour in some more smoothie, drizzle more chocolate, etc.
Top with whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and a mint sprig!
