Taste of the Tropics Part 1
Do you ever wish you could go to a tropical beach whenever the mood strikes? If you are like me…that mood strikes often! This month we are going to do a Taste of the Tropics Series, because I wish I was at a beach right now! First up, the deliciously tropical lava flow smoothie!
Lava Flow Smoothie
I was in Hawaii on my honeymoon the first time I had a lava flow smoothie, and coincidentally on a tropical beach! If you are unfamiliar with lava flow- it is basically a pina colada with a strawberry syrup poured on top. It is like a little slice of heaven in a frosty glass!
The Super Food Sneak
As always, I am looking for ways to sneak in some healthy food for the family. Since this recipe is a smoothie, it is easy to hide all sorts of good things in smoothies! You can add any greens you would like- but it will change the color to a green instead of the traditional pina colada white color. Just a note- my girls LOVED this smoothie, so it is definitely on the favorites list!
First off, I wanted to make this recipe healthier than the original by not adding all the high processed sugars and using real ingredients. Second, by adding a good vanilla protein powder, you can turn this dessert smoothie into a delicious meal! Lastly- have you heard about how fantastic coconut is for you??? Seriously, it is considered the tree of life because you can literally use it all! So without further ado- get to blending this super yummy lava flow smoothie!
Lava Flow Smoothie
A taste of the tropics in lava flow form- a pina colada with a strawberry top!
Pina Colada Part
- 1 half frozen banana
- 1 1/2 cup frozen pinapple
- 1-2 tablespoons coconut cream the solid part on the top of a can of coconut milk (make sure to leave in the fridge for 20 minutes to help separate the solids from the liquid.)
- 1 cup coconut milk use more if the consistency is too thick
- 1-2 scoops vanilla protein powder (optional-to make it a meal)
For the Strawberry Top
- 1 cup fresh strawberries green tops cut off
- 1 splash sweetener- (agave, maple syrup, coconut nectar) to taste
For the Pina Colada Smoothie
Toss all the Pina Colada ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
Pour into a glass and put in the freezer while you whip up the topping.
For the Strawberry Topping
Tossed your washed strawberries (minus green tops) into a blender with as much or as little sweetener as you want and blend until smooth.
Pour on top of the pina colada smoothie and gently stir a bit in and through the smoothie, just a little bit.
